Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical Spondylosis is a degenerative condition of the cervical spine found almost universally in persons over 50 years of age. It occurs early in persons who are susceptible to neck strains, for example – teachers , people with desk jobs , computer users , professional dancers , gymnasts.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF  CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

  1. Pain  and Stiffness in the neck and shoulder , initially intermittent but later persistent  is the most common presenting symptom. Headache may also occur in some cases .
  2. Tingling sensation and numbness in thumb or fingers is often a complaint of a patient
  3. Giddiness  is experienced by some patients

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

  1. Ageing: This condition results due to ageing. There is degeneration of cervical spine which includes cervical disk, joints between the bones of cervical spine and there may be abnormal growth on the vertebrae (bone of the spine).

  2. Awkward working positions:  These days Cervical Spondylosis can be seen in early ages. Early degeneration starts due to awkward working positions for long hours. Some of them as shown below :

TREATMENT AND PREVENTION

A patient suffering from this condition should visit a doctor, who may advise the following to alleviate pain and also give valuable information for prevention of its recurrence.

  • Hot Fomentation.

  • Analgesics.

  • Cervical traction in some cases.

  • Doctor may advise a cervical collar for some patients.

  • Pain relieving physiotherapy modalities.

  • Advise on proper neck posture and neck muscle exercises for prevention of any further episodes.

If the Patient maintain correct posture, prevent any undue stress on the cervical muscles and shoulder and follow the exercise regimen for the neck and the shoulder muscles regularly, further episodes of the same may be prevented.
